While September is “Healthy Aging Month”, you should actually consider the entire year as “Healthy Aging”!

There are several tips from the Office on Women’s Health that can help keep you healthy and happy. These tips and suggestions include:

Eat a Healthy Diet

We all understand how maintaining a healthy diet is important to one’s health. It is particularly important that older adults utilize good nutrition and food safety at all times. Statistics show that a majority of adults consume more than twice the recommended allowance of sodium, which can lead to heart disease and/or hypertension. So, avoid salty, highly processed foods. Eat nutrient rich foods such as whole grains, vegetables, and fruits.

Manage Health Conditions

It is essential as we age that health conditions such as osteoporosis, high blood pressure, and diabetes be managed. It is important that if you have these or any other health conditions that you manage them under the care of a physician.

Correctly Use Medications

Many medications when incorrectly used can cause potentially serious medical conditions. Always use any medications, especially those prescribed by your doctor, as directed. Do not over- or under-use medications.

Health Screenings are Important

Health screenings are important in helping identify any potential health issues. These screenings can often detect a medical condition before any symptoms appear.

Stay Fit

Physical activity can help older adults stay strong and fit. While many people think that they have to go to the gym or fitness center, this is not always the case. You can maintain a regular schedule of taking walks or doing in-home exercises to help you stay fit. Regular exercise can also help with chronic conditions such as heart disease and arthritis.

Approximately one in eight adults over the age of 65 has Alzheimer’s. It is normal that there be some cognitive decline as we age. Studies show that cognitive stimulation can slow that decline. Challenge your mind and continue to learn. You can do things such as take lessons, learn a new language, or even just read a book.

Dr. Thomas Wright, medical director of Laser Lipo and Vein Center, says, “All of these steps play an important part of staying healthy as people age.” He continues, “It is essential that you speak to your doctor about any and all of these tips, so that you remain healthy and safe.”
