A recent study has determined that skin texture, lines and wrinkles around the eyes, and excess weight were the top consumer cosmetic concerns. The survey and study was conducted by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery.

More than 7,300 people participated in the blind online survey. Three thousand five hundred and ninety six people responded that they would consider a cosmetic procedure. In the 2015 Consumer Survey of Cosmetic Dermatology, an overwhelming number — 88 percent— who said they would consider a cosmetic procedure said they were somewhat or extremely bothered by excess weight issues. Another 72 percent said they were bothered by skin discoloration and/or texture problems. Sixty-nine percent said they were bothered by wrinkles and lines under and/or around the eyes.

A separate survey conducted by the American Society for Dermatology Surgery said that members of this professional society performed more than 207,000 body sculpting and contouring procedures in 2014. The most commonly performed procedures used cryolipolysis — a non-invasive body sculpting technique that relies on controlled cooling to cause cell death of fat tissues.

Another frequently performed procedure is that of injections for wrinkle relaxation to reduce the appearance of lines around the eyes, mouth, and forehead. Wrinkle relaxers have been proven to be effective in providing patients a smoother, more youthful appearance.

The study results also indicated that 67 percent of those surveyed considered cosmetic procedures because they were uncomfortable with excess submental fat — most commonly those fatty deposit in the chin and neck area. Recently several products such as Kybella have received FDA approval for the treatment of submental fats in adults. These new products are often considered game changers for those seeking treatment for the elimination of stubborn chin fat.

Dr. Thomas Wright, medical director of The Laser Lipo and Vein Center, echoes the findings of these surveys, saying, “We are seeing a definite increase in the number of people who are seeking cosmetic treatments for any number of cosmetic issues — from the desire for a sleeker figure to eliminating lines and wrinkles.”

He continues, saying, “We are always research new and more effective ways to provide the best results for our patients. We are constantly researching new techniques and products that we can provide, so our patients can look and feel their best!”
