Developed by dermatologic surgeons in the 1980s, tumescent liposuction involves filling the fatty layer of skin with a diluted solution of local anesthesia and other medications prior to removing excess fat. Tumescent liposuction allows for safe and efficient removal of both deep and superficial excess layers of fat with little discomfort, rapid healing, and improved cosmetic results. It is an outpatient procedure.

SmartLipo™ is a laser-assisted liposuction technique that simultaneously destroys fat cells and tightens skin. FDA-approved, SmartLipo™ offers a faster, safer, and less invasive alternative to other liposuction methods, with fewer side effects and a shorter recovery time. SmartLipo™ achieves dramatic results by delivering laser energy through a small incision to localized fat deposits on the face and body. The laser not only ruptures fat cells, which then drain away harmlessly, it also coagulates tissue on contact, stimulating collagen production for tighter skin and resulting in less bleeding. Fat removal can usually be done in a single 45-60-minute treatment with local anesthesia.

After tumescent liposuction, most patients are generally alert and able to function; patients can usually return to a desk-type job within a few days. Physical exercise may be resumed 3-7 days after the procedure.

We are excited to announce that we have recently upgraded our SmartLipo™ procedures and equipment to the new Smartlipo MPX™ Dual Wavelength workstation and laser system, introduced to the medical community just this spring. Smartlipo MPX is the only FDA-cleared, dual-wavelength laser system designed to efficiently liquefy fat and tighten skin through collagen remodeling.

Liposuction is most effective for removing localized fat deposits that do not respond to diet or exercise. Liposuction is not intended as a substitute for weight loss; rather, it is a contouring procedure. It is best utilized in a program of exercise and optimal weight maintenance. The best results are obtained on body areas where there is reasonable muscle tone, good skin elasticity, and fat is not excessive. In cases where there is a significant loss of tone and elasticity, the desired cosmetic results may require a combination of both liposuction and surgical skin tightening to remove the excessive loose tissue.

About the Doctor

A native of New Orleans, Louisiana, Dr. Ben M. Treen is the principal physician for Advanced Dermatology and Laser Center. Board certified by the American Board of Dermatology, and licensed to practice in the states of South Carolina, North Carolina, and Louisiana, he is a graduate of the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston and a honors graduate of the University of Georgia. Dr. Treen completed a residency in Internal Medicine at New Orleans' Oschner Medical Foundation, and a residency in Dermatology at Louisiana State University Medical Center, where he also served as Chief Resident of Dermatology.

The author of numerous articles published in scientific, educational, and medical journals, Dr. Treen speaks frequently at national and international conferences. A recognized authority in the areas of cosmetic and laser procedures, he often trains groups of physicians at our facility in Piedmont, SC. Dr. Treen is on staff as a Clinical Professor of Dermatology at the Louisiana State University Medical Center, and serves as the South Carolina State Chair for the Dermatology Foundation, a non-profit organization devoted to raising funds for dermatologic research. He is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology.
