WHY DO AWAKE LIPOSUCTION?

Liposuction using local anesthesia on an awake patient has several advantages over older, traditional techniques. More finesse using small microcannulas on an awake, cooperative patient optimizes the final result by allowing for the constant visualization of body contours in its normal anatomic position. This decreases visible scars and promote smooth, natural results.

No sedation or general anesthesia allows the patient to have minimal down time. Patients actually walk in for their procedure and after completion, walk out to go home.

Most of the newer techniques such as laserlipo have not been properly studied and may not work well, if at all. These NEWER techniques still require the insertion of small cannulas to actually extract the fat. Although I am trained in all of the techniques, the one I prefer and recommend most often is AWAKE liposuction using microcannulas with tumescent fluid injection.

For more on this fascinating technique, you can go to www.drsukkar.com for before and after photos and a link to my VIDEO of this procedure on one of our AWAKE patients.

More about me:

Dr. Sukkar is a board certified plastic surgeon serving patients from his private practice in Houston, Texas.

Dr. Sukkar was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, and completed his undergraduate degree at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. He graduated LSU summa cum laude with a BS in Microbiology in 1988. That same year, the Baton Rouge Medical Society named him "Premedical Student of the Year," and he was honored with a Charles E. Coates Scholarship. Other honors included induction into Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi and Mortar Board.

Dr. Sukkar’s education as a physician and surgeon is extensive. In 1992, he completed medical school at Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans. Complete training in General Surgery soon followed at the renowned University of Texas Hermann Hospital in Houston at the Texas Medical Center. From 1994-1995, during his five-year training at the University of Texas, Dr. Sukkar was awarded the Thomas D. Cronin Fellowship in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in the Division of Plastic Surgery. Completing his residency in General Surgery in 1998, Dr. Sukkar was accepted into the Division of Plastic Surgery at Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois. This training provided Dr Sukkar with an extensive experience in aesthetic plastic surgery. He completed his fellowship as a Plastic Surgeon at Northwestern University in 2001.

Throughout his training and career, Dr. Sukkar has published on a broad range of topics in plastic surgery, both aesthetic and reconstructive. Dr. Sukkar firmly believes in the importance of continuing medical education (CME) and regularly attends plastic surgery meetings in the US and around the world. Dr Sukkar is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a Member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and is affiliated with the American Medical Association, the Harris County Medical Society, the Texas Medical Association, and the Houston Society of Plastic Surgery. Dr. Sukkar was certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery in 2002.

Dr. Sukkar’s practice philosophy is patient-focused, with patient education as a central component. His manner is easy-going and calm. He spends time with his patients - making sure their questions are answered and their concerns are fully addressed. Dr. Sukkar also recognizes that the decision to undergo aesthetic plastic surgery is personal. Every patient is treated with respect and understanding... and with the utmost discretion and confidentiality. His aesthetic eye and caring approach is focused toward helping each patient achieve the optimal outcome in a safe manner.

Perhaps these qualities are the result of Dr. Sukkar’s extensive training, his research, or his clinical experience. Or perhaps... they are simply the signs of a dedicated physician and surgeon. Houston Magazine named Dr. Sukkar as one of Houston’s "Top Docs for Women" in 2005 and 2006.

Dr. Sukkar and his family live in the Clear Lake City area, near Houston.
