Board Certified Dermatologic Surgeon
Dr. Retief is the owner of Retief Skin Center. She is one of a handful of Board Certified, Fellowship-trained Dermatologic Surgeons in the Tennessee area, specializing in Mohs Micrographic Surgery, Reconstructive Surgery, Laser Surgery, and Cosmetic Dermatologic Surgery. She is a native of Huntingdon, Tennessee and attended Vanderbilt University on an academic scholarship. She graduated Summa cum Laude in 1989. She obtained her medical degree from The University of Tennessee in Memphis, where she graduated with the prestigious honor of Alpha Omega Alpha. She then completed her Internal Medicine Internship and Dermatology Residency at Northwestern Medical Center and Rush-Presbyterian St. Luke's Hospital, respectively, in Chicago, Illinois. As a dermatology resident at Rush Presbyterian-St. Lukes Hospital, she excelled in the advanced surgical management of skin disorders, resconstructive surgery, and laser surgery. She served as chief resident in dermatology her final year of residency in 1998.
After completing her training at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Lukes Medical Center in 1998, she was one of approximately 40 dermatologists in the world to begin a Mohs Micorgraphic Surgery Fellowship,emphasizing skin oncology, Mohs Micrographic, Laser, and Reconstructive Surgery. This fellowship, approved by the American College of Mohs Micrographic Surgery and Cutaneous Oncology, was completed in 1999 at The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in Charleston. Dr. Retief was fortunate enough to train under the current President of the American College of Mohs Micrographic Surgery and Cutaneous Oncology. During this intensive surgical fellowship, she performed over 1,000 Mohs Surgery and Reconstructive cases in addition to hundreds of Cosmetic surgery and Laser cases.
Dr. Retief has been practicing Dermatology since 1999. Dr. Retief practiced in Palm Beach, Florida for 2 years after completing her training. She then moved to Nashville, Tennessee to be closer to her family. Dr. Retief brings her experience and artistic eye to the Middle Tennessee area. Trained in Dermatology, Mohs Micrographic Surgery, Reconstructive Surgery, Laser Surgery, and Cosmetic surgery, she can offer many state of the art treatments for your skin condition. Currently, Dr. Retief removes 800-1000 skin cancers per year using Mohs Micrographic Surgery. She also performs a variety of cosmetic procedures and surgeries under local anesthesia. Dr. Retief is an expert in the management of facial skin cancer and advanced minimally invasive cosmetic techniques performed with local anesthesia. She has been published in The Journal of Dermatologic Surgery and The Archives of Dermatology.
Dr. Retief is a fellow of the American College of Mohs Micrographic Surgery and Cutaneous Oncology, American Society of Dermatologic Surgery, and the American Academy of Dermatology. She is a member of the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society as well as a member of the Tennessee Medical Association and the Tennessee Dermatology Society. She has privileges at both Baptist and Centenniel Hospital. Personally, Dr. Retief is married to Cliff Retief, a native of Johanesburg, South Africa. They have one daughter, Elle.
