Board Certified Cosmetic Dermatologist
Practice Information
In addition to four years of medical school and three years of training in internal medicine (covering diseases that affect all aspects of the body), Dr. Berger has spent 4 years formal training in a dermatology residency studying skin, hair and nails. This training focuses on diagnosis, surgery and treatment of skin cancers and diseases, as well as the aesthetic side of skin rejuvenation, maintenance, and healing.
There are two standards of liposuction. Traditional liposuction has required general anesthesia, hospital stays, large cannulas and extended recovery before returning to work and other activities. Many surgeons still use this technique.
The new standard, Tumescent (local anesthesia only) aka FINESSE liposuction instead uses large volumes of dilutes local anesthesia. This allows for extremely safe and comfortable liposuction on the conscious patient. Dr. Berger uses no "conscious sedation", as this can suppress breathing reflexes. The only medications used are lorazepam and clonidine by mouth, medications which allow relaxation without suppressing respiration. The awake patient is more easily positioned for more thorough results and smoother transition between treated and untreated areas. More delicate cannulas are used to gently suction fat lobules away with minimal trauma, and blood loss with the FINESSE technique is minimal. There is no general anesthesia to recover from, so the risks attributed to general anesthesia are avoided, and there is no post anesthesia nausea or hangover, allowing you to get back to your daily activities usually in about 2-4 days.
