Meet the Doctor:
Dr. Gerry Sotomayor is one of the best known Hispanic surgeons in Atlanta. He studied his BS in Biology at the University of Puerto Rico and obtained his medical degree at the accredited Universidad Central del Caribe in 1980. From there he and his wife, Vivian, moved to Akron, Ohio where he obtained his Internship and Residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1984. Due to a national reduction in General Surgery residencies during those years he was able to assist in many other surgical areas that later on provided a solid basis for his well diversified practice.

Upon arriving in Atlanta in 1984, he was one of the few surgeons trained in Laser surgery and in Advanced Laparoscopic procedures. His desire to teach others led him to the creation of many training workshops in Gynecology Surgery at Northside Hospital. He participates actively in the Continuing Medical Education advisory board at Northside and St. Joseph Hospitals. He developed the Gynecological Endoscopy Society where the latest surgical inventions and techniques are discussed in a very friendly and professional way with doctors from Georgia and other states. The fact that his primary language is Spanish has launched his career to many Central and South American countries as a guest speaker in areas of new product development.

Recently, his interest in Cosmetic Surgery developed as a result of the many inquiries from his patients and friends. He trained in the area of Laser Liposuction first and after a visit from one of his mentors, Dr. William Saye, the developer of the Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy, his attention moved to a safer liposculpting technique called VASER liposuction surgery. Lasers and ultrasonic tools have been in use for over 25 years and they were an easy transition for Dr. Sotomayor who has significant knowledge in both fields. He has completed and become fully certified to use the VASER liposuction under tumescent anesthesia with Dr. Gregory Zengo, VASER technology’s leader and trainer in VASER liposuction surgeries.
