What’s the Difference Between Traditional and Modern Liposuction?

When it comes to defining the differences between traditional and modern liposuction, those differences can be quite dramatic.

Both types of procedures—liposuction and liposculpture—accomplish the same goal: to remove unwanted fat and sculpt the body, however, the methods used to accomplish those goals vary from procedure to procedure.

Liposculpture

Liposculpture is a newer form of liposuction that uses a tumescent technique that includes very small tubes (or tubes) and local anesthesia to remove large amounts of subcutaneous fat from the body. During the actual procedure, the surgeon applies local to the treated areas only.

The local anesthetic is much safer mainly because the doctor uses less medication that affects the local or treated area only. As such, the procedure helps eliminate the risks of traditional liposuction mainly because in the latter procedure, the doctor uses a general anesthetic that puts you to sleep completely. As result, downtime for patients is typically much longer. For many different reasons the newer and more modern forms of liposuction help decrease the risks and side effects associated with traditional methods.

Traditional Liposuction

The traditional liposuction procedure differs from lipsculpture in that it incorporates larger tubes (or cannula) to remove the fat. In addition, the doctor relies on scraping and suctioning fat tissues by mechanical means, and the result is often an irregular skin surface, bleeding, pain, and other complications.

With traditional forms of liposuction, the surgeon removes larger quantities of fat from your body, offering a better way to help people lose weight.

With traditional liposuction, the surgeon makes a small incision into which a cannula is inserted. He then moves the cannula from side to side to help break up the fat cells. The doctor also injects local anesthetic into the fat areas in order to compress the blood vessels and prevent too much bleeding.

Finally, the suctions fat cells through the cannula. Once removed, the fat cells don’t regenerate, and as a result, they go away permanently.

With liposculpture, the amount of weight that can be removed from your body is typically one to four pounds, whereas with liposuction, the doctor can remove as much as 14 pounds from your body during one session. Much like liposculpture, however, liposuction can also be used to remove fat from several different areas of your body, including the stomach, upper thighs, buttocks, back, upper arms, and chin.

Which is Better: Liposculpture or Liposuction?

In order to make a decision about which procedure works best for you, it’s important to realize some of the differences between the two. As you might expect, each method has its own advantages and disadvantages.

For example, if you want to remove a small amount of fat from a particular area, liposculpture might be the best choice for you. On the other hand, if you want to remove larger amounts of weight, liposuction is probably the right choice.

Since liposculpture is much more precise than traditional liposuction, it’s more focused on adding shape and definition to your body, as opposed to removing large quantities of fat. In the end, the choice is up to you, but as always, be sure to consult your cosmetic surgeon before taking the leap.
