Is Liposuction Right for You?

If you are tired of trying to lose inches and fat deposits that are just not responding to diet and exercise, you may be considering liposuction. Liposuction procedures can be performed on just about any part of the body, and is an effective way to get that smoother, toned profile.

So Who is a Good Candidate for Liposuction?

Most people can undergo liposuction; however, there are several factors that can make you a better candidate. The following are some factors that can make you a good candidate for a successful procedure:

  • Be within 30 percent of your ideal weight
  • Have firm, elastic skin, along with good muscle tone
  • Do not have any illnesses or conditions that can prevent proper healing
  • Non-smoker
  • Have a positive outlook, reasonable expectations and goals

Having realistic expectations is perhaps one of the most important aspects for liposuction patients. Today’s modern techniques are not designed to help patients lose lots of weight; rather they will provide you a smoother more contoured look.

Who May Not be a Good Candidate for Liposuction?

If you are not a healthy person, there are greater risks. For instance, if you have a medical history of cardiac arrhythmias, seizure disorders, immunodeficiency and other such conditions, you run the increased risk of surgical complications.

Certain drugs, such as aspirin, NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) or anticoagulants can increase the risk of bleeding, making liposuction unsafe.

Drugs that inhibit the metabolism of the lidocaine used during liposuction can increase the risk of drug interactions. You may be required to discontinue these drugs prior to undergoing liposuction.

Liposuction is not considered an effective treatment for obesity, so those who need to lose a considerable amount of weight are not good candidates.

Your skin should have good elasticity; otherwise, you may experience a crepéy or wrinkly appearance after the procedure.

How to Determine if You are a Good Candidate

The best way to determine if you are a good candidate for liposuction is to consult with an experienced and qualified physician. During a consultation with Dr. Seiger and his team at the Skin and Vein Center, your options and goals will be discussed. The doctor will go over your general health history and then discuss your expectations. During the consultation, the team will create an individualized plan so that you will be satisfied with the end results and walk away feeling and looking the best you can!
