The Importance of Safe Liposuction

The Importance of Safe Liposuction

Liposuction may be a beautifying procedure, but it is also a surgical one, requiring years of study and specialized training to do safely. Recently, some spas have added liposuction as a service, right along with manicures and massages. As liposuction is such a safe procedure when performed correctly, and as it has such a quick recovery time, the appeal is obvious. You can go in for the day, get a haircut and a pedicure, remove some abdominal fat, and be on your way!

As nice as that sounds, liposuction in a spa environment is not safe. Liposuction should be performed in a hospital, liposuction clinic, or private doctor’s office. Preferably, the clinic should be accredited and the liposuction doctor should be board certified in a surgical specialty, as well as having hands-on training in liposuction.

Recently, 11 health spas in Illinois were cited for illegal and dangerous cosmetic procedures. These spas were offering surgical-medical procedures, like liposuction, without the proper medical supervision or facilities.

If an uncertified, untrained technician is performing your liposuction procedure, you run
the risk of:

  • Infection
  • Complications or allergic reactions from the local anesthetic
  • Injury from removing too many fat cells
  • Unnatural body contours
  • Dimpling or wrinkling of the skin at the liposuction site
  • Scarring on the face and body

Why run the risk?

Liposuction is one of the safest cosmetic procedures you can have, as long as it is done properly. In the hands of an experienced surgeon, liposuction can leave you with a better body with minimal scarring and a less than one percent chance of complications. Leave the manicures, massages, and facials to the spas and seek out a board certified cosmetic surgeon to perform your liposuction procedure.
