In the Body Treatment  Zone with Exilis

Less equals more with this monopolar radiofrequency device

When it comes to fat removal, it’s hard to argue with the dramatic results of liposuction. Today, however, we live in a non-surgical world, and cosmetic treatments that offer body contouring benefits with limited downtime plus comfort are a priority, especially as we approach bikini season. The tradeoff is usually achieving more subtle body contouring results, but in the case of certain technologies, less can equal more. Take Exilis (BTL Aesthetics), a great example of a technology that may offer a little less in terms of significant fat reduction than its surgical liposuction counterpart, but much more when it comes to multiple body shaping benefits: Exilis is FDA approved for the non-invasive body shaping, cellulite reduction and skin tightening—anyone who has trouble spots will understand the the appeal of this 3-in-1 solution.

Exilis Energy
Exilis is a monopolar radiofrequency (RF) device that heats targeted “trouble zones,” including those with excess fat deposits, cellulite and loose skin.

"[It] causes thermal heating and induces tissue responses such as increased metabolism, permeability of cell membranes and increased blood flow," Jeanine Downie, MD, Montclair, NJ, told Cosmetic Surgery Times last year. "High-frequency energy causes targeted deep thermal heating, which accelerates local fat tissue lipolysis."

In other words, the RF energy heats the fat and causes it to die. Over time, Dr. Downie explained to CST, the treated area experiences a reduction in the amount of fat. But the results don’t end there. RF also stimulates new collagen, thereby improving the tone, tightness and overall quality of the treated skin.

According to Dr. Downie, "At least four weekly treatments are necessary, and in my clinical experience I have seen 2 inches or more lost from the treated area."

Comfort Zone
The procedure also is said to be more comfortable compared with other monopolar RF devices, Kimberly Butterwick, MD, told CST. Anesthesia is generally not needed. After targeting your treatment zones, your doctor will clean and mark them. Using a handheld laser, your doctor will then spend about 5 minutes focusing the RF energy in those zones. A built-in cooling mechanism will ensure you remain comfortable during treatment. Tightening results can be seen immediately due to the body’s natural inflammatory response, also making this a great fix to achieve skin tightening results for last-minute events. Longer term results, however, require a series of treatments over 4 sessions, every 10 to 14 days. You may see results in as soon as 2 weeks, with optimal results 3 to 4 months after all treatment sessions:

  • Less fat
  • Less cellulite
  • Better contours
  • Tighter skin
  • No pain
  • No downtime

Trend Spotting: Liposuction vs Non-Surgical Body Contouring
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons’ annual statistics the number of surgical liposuction procedures has dropped by 43% since 2000. The reason? Innovative non-surgical body contouring treatments offer today’s body conscious patients minimal downtime and afford gradual, natural improvements. They often require multiple visits to the doctor’s office and may even cost more over time, but the numbers don’t lie: many patients clearly find the tradeoff to be worth it.

While the ASPS doesn’t report non-surgical body contouring device treatments, their sister association the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons does. This is the first year the ASAPS has reported non-invasive body sculpting numbers, which totaled 76,612 in 2012.
